Delaunay, Robert
(1885-1941)
   painter
A pioneer of abstract art, Robert Delaunay was born in Montpellier. After an apprenticeship in the workshop of a theater set designer, he was influenced by paul gauguin and the Pont-Avers school, became interested in the neoimpressionism of georges seurat, then moved away for cubism and to the style of Orphism (the name was given by Guillaume Apollinaire), which emphasized circular forms and light colors. His early series—Saint-Severin (1909), La Tour Eiffel (1910), Les Tours de Laon (1910-12), La Ville de Paris (1910-12)—caught the attention of Wassily Kandinsky, Paul Klee, and others, and his series done in 1912 and entitled Fenêtres et Disques circulaire was described by Apollinaire as the "first manifestation [of] totally abstract art." His love of rhythm and movement led to other series and works (Hélices, 1923; Portraits, Coureurs, 1924-26; Joie de vivre, 1930; Rythmes sans fin, 1933-34).
